At Santa Paula’s Isbell Middle School, students have studied and practiced news writing, layout skills, and ethical considerations in preparation for publishing the first issue of their school newspaper, titled the Isbell Times. All 60 students will have a part in writing, designing and producing one issue each month starting in January.
Content planned includes news and opinion pieces covering the controversies over gum chewing and school lunches. Features such as recognizing student accomplishments and reporting details about the best of Isbell are also to be researched and explored in print. Ms. DeMars, the class advisor believes this project will allow students to gain real world skills.
